THE THESISDurable measurement starts with purpose, consent and data minimization; server-side infrastructure improves control but does not create permission.
Design from decisions
List the decisions the business must make, define the minimum events and dimensions required, assign owners and retention periods, and remove collection that has no decision use. More tags can reduce trust and reliability.
Consent as system state
Capture regional consent choices, propagate them consistently, respect withdrawal and separate essential operation from analytics and advertising. Test default, update and revocation paths—not only the banner UI.
Server-side with controls
A server container can validate schemas, redact fields, enrich approved data, enforce destinations and improve resilience. Maintain an allow-list, observability, versioning and access control. Never forward data simply because it arrived.
Quality and governance
Reconcile key events with source systems, monitor loss and duplication, document metric definitions and audit changes. Give users a clear privacy explanation and give teams a data contract they can actually follow.
Practical questions
Does server-side tracking bypass consent?+
No. It changes data flow and control, not the legal or ethical basis for collection and use.
